Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) is a family of extracellular endopeptidases that degrade the extracellular matrix and other extracellular proteins despite its role in maintaining the integrity of the skin and other tissues. MMP has also been shown to play a role in the process of angiogenesis (blood vessel formation which generally accompanies malignant tissue growth).
Along with aging and other conditions, metabolism of cells such as fibroblasts may be disrupted. This disorder can affect the equilibrium point between the production and degradation of the extracellular matrix (Murphy and Reynolds, 1993). Biochemical research has compared the composition of Plant Placenta to that of Human Placenta, showing that they have a bio-analogous composition.
